Artist Statement
Usually my images incubate over a period of weeks or months – compiled from a collection of phrases, sketches and photos that are eventually culled together with layers of current events and spiritual searchings. These recent works begin with a landscape that has been worn bare by the presence of consumption and neglect. We then enter this world as time has become unimportant and the next stage of development is undetermined. We are now only observers and no longer participants.
Whether in the process of decline or on a slow path of restoration these mythical places retain certain markers of their previous occupants. That presence is suggested through geometric forms that are at times layered like found artifacts just below the surface. Occasionally these forms stand out as though they are a declaration of what is to come – like an overlayment of technical plans toward a possible future. No matter the direction of change underway there is always the debris of the previous world washing into the work, calling itself to our attention. Like clues of a mystery these remnants offer us another opportunity to determine the story behind the demise of this place. Then we are left to decide for ourselves what comes next.
